Killer fires are continuing to ravage Australia with people fleeing New South Wales where a week-long state of emergency is in force.

New South Wales fire commissioner Shane Fitzsimmons has warned of "volatile" conditions which could intensify the fires.

Since the start of September, fires in Australia have killed at least 23 people.

Dozens of people are also missing and some 1,500 homes have been lost in the fires.

On January 2 it was announced that the state of New South Wales declared a week-long state of emergency as high temperatures and strong winds are set for the following few days, fuelling the deadly blazes.
The first day of the year saw Aussies face a "humanitarian crisis" as food, water and fuel began to run out while bushfires continued to spread.
