Elon Musk, the CEO of SpaceX, has selected 2029 as the year when humans will reach Mars on his company’s Starship rocket.
The tech billionaire had wanted to send the first crewed flights to Mars in 2024 or 2026, but the next-generation craft’s construction has gone behind schedule.
Jeff Bezos’ Blue Origin lawsuit against Nasa for awarding SpaceX a multi-billion dollar contract to build Starship as a lunar lander, as well as Elon Musk’s choice to refocus on the Starlink space internet project in the wake of Russia’s invasion of Ukraine, have all caused delays.
Mr Musk gave a more definite date of 2029 in response to an inquiry on Twitter on Wednesday evening.
SpaceX has already accomplished a number of milestones in its efforts to develop a multi-planetary rocket capable of transporting people and cargo beyond the Solar System, the most recent of which was loading the primary spacecraft aboard a Super Heavy booster at the company’s Starbase facility in Texas.
Starship will be capable of delivering up to 150 tons of payload into orbit when paired with its booster, making it the most powerful rocket ever built.
The most significant challenge is ensuring the Starship craft’s rapid reusability, which Mr Musk argues is critical to reaching his objective of transforming mankind into a multi-planetary species.
“If aircraft were not reusable, how much would an airline ticket cost?” Mr Musk stated last month at a Starship event that flights may potentially cost as little as a few million dollars, which he described as “crazy low” by today’s standards.
The ultimate goal is to establish a permanent colony on Mars by 2050, with Elon Musk recently indicating that crewed trips might begin as early as 2030.
